Issue #50: Rediscovering the magic of summer
Embracing the season with setting intentions, small changes, and my take on Grandma's beloved banana bread recipe.
Welcome to The Monday Mood, where we ease into the week without the pressure of starting fresh or having it all figured out. From book recommendations and creative encouragement to reminders that you’re doing better than you think, I hope this space gives you something that feels good, whether that’s your next read, permission to protect your time, or just the feeling that someone gets it.
Hi friends,
I can’t believe we’re at issue #50! When I started this newsletter, I had no idea it would become such an important part of my week (and hopefully yours!). Thank you for being here, for reading, and for all your wonderful replies. It means so much to me.
As we get closer to summer, I’ve been thinking about how to appreciate the season without letting it pass by. As a child, I loved this time of year because it meant swimming or going to the beach. Now as an adult, I count down the days until the weather cools down and frees us from the humidity.
I was inspired by a recent mail club to make the most of the season, find ways to enjoy it and reconnect with what made summer fun as a child. Here’s what I came up with.
My 7 intentions for the months ahead:
Read in the park at least once a week
Have a picnic
Take walks at golden hour
See a movie at the drive-in
Fill up a disposable camera
Explore a nearby town we haven’t visited yet
Eat dinner outdoors whenever possible
What about you? What intentions do you want to set for this summer? Maybe it’s learning a new skill, reconnecting with nature, or just getting outdoors more. I’d love to hear what you’re planning, let me know in the comments!
TO TRY: Create a summer intentions list for what you want this season to feel like. The Ink Post's May subscription included a summer bucket list with a place on the back to add our June intentions, featured in this issue for some inspiration.
TO WATCH: I unexpectedly really enjoyed Rivals. Set in the 1980s, it follows the rivalry between a British nobleman and a nouveau riche TV executive in the Cotswolds. It’s witty and campy, and David Tennant and Aidan Turner are fantastic in their roles!
TO LISTEN: I’m listening for an hour a day to Jeff Hiller’s audiobook and it is so delightful. His charming and funny nature shines through his stories that are both hilarious and touching. I loved him as Joel in Somebody Somewhere and this was on my list since my best friend recommended it.
TO EAT: Some easy weeknight meals on rotation this week. Chicken and broccoli stir fry, antipasto chickpea salad, and vegan maple curry pasta.
After last week’s issue where I talked about baking whenever I want to remember and honor my grandma, here is the recipe! It’s the perfect comfort food and I always remember her warming a slice with butter or cream cheese, and a cup of tea.
Last year, I couldn’t stop talking about Saltwater by Katy Hays, a twisted summer mystery that’s perfect for the warmer weather. I decided to revisit it on audio and it’s just as intriguing the second time around.
If you’re looking for a book that’ll transport you to the sunny coast of Italy and keep you engrossed in a decades-old crime, long-buried secrets, family drama, and the complicated dynamics of old money, this is it. It’s a slow-burn, plot-driven story set on the stunning coast of Capri, with multiple POVs and timelines, but Hays weaves it all together in a way that keeps you guessing until the very end.
If you’re ready for a book that’s glamorous and gritty, Saltwater is the perfect way to kick off your summer reading.
Thanks for being here and being a part of The Monday Mood. I’m so grateful for this community. If something in this issue resonated with you, I’d love if you’d tap the heart, leave a comment, or share it with someone who might need it.

Adding Saltwater to my reading list! And that banana bread sounds amazing. My summer intention is to take advantage of all my city has to offer. They do A LOT of free workouts and music.
You've set some beautiful intentions Coleen and I LOVE the idea of this. While I don't have my specific list created yet, I think my intention overall is to just do new things, try new experiences and put myself out of my comfort zone...that's so needed!! 💛💛
